Has Your Battery Survived the Winter? Tips to Get Your Battery Through the Rest of the Season

During winter, the colder temperatures can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s battery. While your battery may have survived the first portion of winter, it can be difficult to keep them at their best throughout the rest of the season. At Collision King, we understand that few things are more frustrating than a dead battery, so we’ve listed some tips to help get your battery through the rest of winter:

  1. Have Your Battery Tested

Take some time to have your battery tested during the last part of winter. While you may have gotten it tested when winter first began, it’s a good idea to get it checked out again, as the unusually cold temperatures this season may have affected your battery. This tip is especially important if your battery is four years old or older. Older batteries are more susceptible to failing due to cold temperatures.

  1. Keep Jumper Cables in Your Car

In the event your battery is having trouble surviving the rest of winter, it’s always a good idea to keep jumper cables in your car. By always having this item on-hand, you can give your battery the jolt it needs to safely get you to your destination. However, if you find yourself needing to use your jumper cables quite often, it’s a sign that it’s time for a new battery altogether.

  1. Don’t Turn on Car Accessories Right Away

During winter, it can be tempting to crank up the heat, turn on your lights, and tune into your favorite radio station. However, these accessories require battery power and can add stress to a battery that may already be weak from the cold. Instead of immediately using these accessories, wait a few minutes for the alternator to charge the battery.

  1. Keep Your Battery Clean

The colder winter temperatures thicken engine oil and increase the amount of electrical resistance, meaning your battery has to work harder. If your battery is covered in dirt or debris, it can add to this resistance.  You can easily keep your battery clean by using a damp cloth, baking soda, water, and a toothbrush.

Winter is coming to a close, but we aren’t out of the woods just yet. It’s still important to keep an eye on your car battery to ensure it will get through the rest of the season.
